Harnai Beach, Dapoli
A working fishing port with a famous evening fish auction, dolphin safaris and boat rides to the island sea fort of Suvarnadurg.
Harnai Beach is a vibrant coastal destination known for its blend of maritime history and high-energy trade. The shore is a gateway for early-morning dolphin safari tours, and guarding the horizon is the majestic Suvarnadurg Fort (the Golden Fort) — a 17th-century island fortress of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's empire, reachable only by local ferry from the port.
Things to know before you go
The live fish auction: Every evening around 4:00 PM, hundreds of traditional fishing boats dock at the shore. The beach turns into a lively open-air auction where buyers bid on fresh pomfret, kingfish, prawns and crabs.
Suvarnadurg Sea Fort: A short boat ride off the coast sits Suvarnadurg, an island stronghold fortified by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the 17th century to counter European and Siddi naval forces.
Traveller note: Heavy boat traffic and the active market mean the water here is not ideal for casual swimming.
“Reviewers enjoy the uncrowded stretches for sunset photography and dolphin-spotting boat rides, though the shore near the port can have a strong fish odour and varying cleanliness.”
